At least six people are hurt in a shooting on a California school campus.

According to Oakland police Capt. Casey Johnson, during a news conference on Wednesday, there were at least six casualties from a shooting on the grounds of a school in northern California.

According to officials, three of the injured were rushed to Highland hospital in Oakland and were in serious condition, while the other three were taken to Eden medical centre in Castro Valley and their situations were unknown.

According to the TV station, the shooting took place on a street that is home to numerous schools and many youngsters of school age.

According to Lt. Ray Kelly, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the incident is "no longer active."

According to tweets from Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf, the incident occurred at Sojourner Truth Independent Study, an alternative kindergarten through 12th-grade school that shares a building with three other schools.

According to Oakland fire department spokesperson Michael Hunt, paramedics brought six people with gunshot wounds to hospitals.

Officials with Oakland Unified school district, according to John Sasaki, "do not have any information beyond what Oakland police are stating." He said there are no students at the headquarters of Sojourner Truth Independent Study.

The schools' location, on Fontaine Street, was the subject of an investigation, according to a tweet from the Oakland police department.

The mayor tweeted that the injured in the shooting at Sojourner Truth Independent Study alternative school were all adults

The day before the shooting on Wednesday Oakland's police chief, LeRonne Armstrong, has made measures to reduce the city's continuous gun violence by stationing more officers in neighbourhoods where the crime is concentrated and where they believe people are frequently implicated in shootings.

After more than two years of increased gun violence that started early in the pandemic, this most recent shooting occurred. 96 individuals have been slain so far this year, largely by firearms. Last year at this time, 102 people died.

In Oakland and several other cities in the region, killings and gun violence were at historic lows before the outbreak. However, by the middle of 2020, gun violence was on the rise and the typical havens of schools, community centres, and workers in violence prevention were mostly inaccessible. At year's conclusion, 102 persons had died, 24 more than in the previous year.

The spike in homicides has not spared the city's youngsters. A Guardian study of state homicide data shows that at least 14 people under the age of 20 were slain in 2020. The following year, more people would pass away, including 18-year-old Oakland resident Demetrius Fleming-Davis, who was shot and killed while riding in the back of a truck.
